It’s a busy day ahead in Vermont politics, and we’ll have all the news as it comes in.

Leading the ticker: the second-to-last campaign-finance filing deadline before Election Day. Usually, reporters turn their attention immediately to fundraising totals submitted by candidates for statewide office. Today, however, all eyes will be on the filing from “Vermonters First,” the Republican super PAC that has spent at least $70,000 to run ads supporting Vince Illuzzi and Wendy Wilton, the GOP candidates for auditor and treasurer, respectively.

Vermonters First treasurer Tayt Brooks hasn’t until this point disclosed who is underwriting the organization, but said he’ll unveil the donors in paperwork filed today.

Everything’s due by 5 p.m.

At 2:15 this afternoon, elections officials will convene a status conference in Montpelier to discuss the recount in the Progressive gubernatorial primary. There’s an official hearing on the matter scheduled for tomorrow at 9 a.m., but we hear the recount could be wrapped up today.

Martha Abbott was previously declared the winner by a single vote, but anti-mountaintop-wind activist Annette Smith is hoping to emerge victorious in the recount.

If Abbott retains her lead, she’ll bow out of the race, leaving Peter Shumlin and Randy Brock to duke it out. If Smith wins, however, expect to see a third major-party candidate step into the ring.
