Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton will win the state of Vermont and its three Electoral College votes.
Clinton’s victory over Republican Donald Trump is no surprise. The only unknown was how quickly a major news gathering outfit would project her as the winner. NBC News answered the question at 7:00 p.m., exactly the moment polls closed.
President Barack Obama carried Vermont in 2008 and 2012 by massive margins, and Clinton’s victory over Trump was never really in question, despite her lopsided loss to hometown hero Bernie Sanders in the March presidential primary. In that race, Sanders, Vermont’s junior senator, walloped Clinton by an 86 percent to 14 percent margin.
Since then, however, Sanders has campaigned around the country on Clinton’s behalf.
There was a small smattering of cheers at the Hilton Hotel in Burlington as Clinton’s win was announced on television. Most of the expected crowd had yet to arrive what Vermont Democrats hope is a widespread victory party.
