Exclusive: Investigation report recommends no action against Attorney General Bill Sorrell

MONTPELIER — A report completed by a lawyer appointed to investigate alleged illegal campaign finance activity and other actions by Democratic Attorney General William Sorrell and reviewed by a panel of county state’s attorneys does not recommend any sanctions or penalties, according to a draft report of his findings obtained exclusively by the Vermont Press Bureau. The investigation, conducted by independent counsel Thomas A. Little, “took its scope from the six allegations of the Complaint” filed by attorney Brady Toensing, the vice chairman of the Vermont Republican Party. Four allegations investigated by Little involved campaign finance laws, one allegation involved violations of federal and state criminal statutes and one allegation involved a conflict of interest. Little, who declined to comment on the report Thursday, was tasked with reporting his findings for review to a bipartisan group of eight state’s attorneys that form a new Campaign Finance Review Committee. Toensing’s arrival ushers in new chapter to Shumlin/Dodge land dispute

A high-profile attorney with ties to the Republican Party has become the newest character in an ongoing saga featuring the governor of Vermont and his ill-fated land deal. Brady Toensing, whose former clients include Republican candidate for governor Brian Dubie, has signed on to represent Jeremy Dodge, the jilted East Montpelier landowner seeking to regain the 16-acre homestead he sold to Peter Shumlin last fall. Dodge’s children say Shumlin exploited their troubled father by using the threat of an imminent tax sale to snap up for $58,000 a property valued by town listers at $140,000. But what has until now been a neighborly dispute could soon turn political as Toensing, a veteran Republican operative, enters the fray. Toensing on Tuesday denied any partisan motivations.
